We are again in the roaring 20s… a hundred years later… but this time it’s the party of survival… not the party before the pain. South Africa comes up to take a breath. The world steps into the sun, desperate for escape and joy after being in the grip of a nightmare.

Moggel will take us there.

This comedy romp is born from a premise where the boundaries are pushed, the envelope torn open and the rules thrown into the wind. The main impetus dictates: To entertain and lift us, the audience, into the realm we’ve almost forgotten exists. Joy, fun… and unabashed laughter.

We dig into the toolbag of the greats and pull in all the delicious machinations to create a film that will not only shake out the frightened cobwebs and predictions of doom, but that has everything it takes to soar as a cult favourite. To achieve that, no walking on eggs can be tolerated. “Moggel” calls for bravery and the courage of our convictions as we open the door and windows to allow the voice of this story to blow the roof off and leave you limp with glee in laughter.

Let’s start with the LOOK. The heartfelt award-winning films… the brilliantly lit and carefully crafted and orchestrated nuances of the films of WES ANDERSON (The Darjeeling Express, Life Aquatic and The Grand Budapest Hotel) are taken one step further. We hit the audience, using the technicolour palet and highlighting the production design by pushing these powerful colours. The bright yellow dress. The popping pink tie. The red, red lips. The characters literally pop. Their world becomes alive, the colours intensifying as the story progresses. Almost in sync with the mood of the audience. Bright and colourful. Catchwords of “Moggel’s” look. Of course, both are carefully controlled to achieve the feeling that everything gradually brightens and blossoms to full colour as the characters and the story flowers. Reminiscent of the later work of Charlie Chaplin.

To support this “happiness” base of the film, we turn to the masters for the soundtrack. The Silent Film Masters. We are in step with the unique tone and sound of this authentic joyride of a film. The honky-tonk, highly descriptive and emotionally loaded sound-track accompanying Silent Films in the 20’s come home to “Moggel” as the soundtrack almost becomes a commentary… or guide to the emotional code of the scenes and sequences.

The sharp and slick editing feed off the music will lift our spirits, as the director takes us to a different view of the world. Utilising drone-cameras “Moggel” truly takes us on a journey to give us that added view, that extra peek at the characters, the hidden worlds and characteristics, while keeping the brisk pace going. The film leaves us breathless and happy.

Expect  to be tossed topsy-turvy as “Moggel” takes you on a journey of joy and delight.

Die masjiengewere blaf steeds ononderbroke dood en verwoesting uit. Maar van die aanvallers dring deur tot onder die mure. Aan hulle kan nou niks meer gedoen word nie. Die manne het streng bevele om hulle nie bloot te stel nie, want as hulle die Arabiere hier onder die mure wil doodskiet, moet hulle opstaan en oorleun. En die Arabiese lood sing nou warm en dig oor die fort se mure. Duisende Arabiere het binne trefafstand uit die saals gespring en op die sand plat geval. Hulle blaker die borswerings se granietmure sodat die vonke spat. Perde hardloop in wilde, fantastiese kringe oor die dooies wat soos ’n donker plaat hier op die sand lê. En elke minuut sterf nog Arabiere daar op die sand, want ’n dodelike vuur word hier van die borswerings af volgehou. Maar agter die wat sterf, wag nog duisende wat die voorstes volg…

En toe kom die tweede vlaag aangestorm… donderend en skreeuend, net soos die eerste een. Weer die aaklige slagting van lood wat deur ruiters en perde skeur. Nog enkeles dring deur na die muur met ysterhakke en toue. Hordes spring uit perde se saals en val dan plat op die sand. Nou sing die lood nog digter oor die fort se mure. En toe, met ’n sagte swisj… swaai die eerste haak hoog oor die borswering en die ysterhaak slaan klappend en klingelend agter die borswering vas.

 

ZOETENDALSVLEI

Die film is gebasseer op ñ ware liefdesverhaal en verskyn ook in boekvorm as “Soetendalsvlei se Bruid”, geskryf deur Joey Jansen.

Sinopsis:

Christine (gespeel deur Anlia van Rensburg) is ñ beroemde model wat die oog van ñ suksesvolle besigheidsman en boer, Olaff (gespeel deur Bobby van Jaarsveld) vang. Hy sien haar as sy trou-vrou, maar Christine is reeds verloof. ñ Motor ongeluk laat Christine sonder ñ loopbaan en inkomste laat en toe Olaff uitvind sy het boonop haar verlowing verbreek, bedink hy ñ plan om tyd te koop, letterlik, sodat hy haar hart kan wen.

Jimmy, Olaff se regterhand op die plaas (gespeel deur Soli Philander) en Ma Martha (gespeel deur Abidah Dixon-Mohammed) hou van die mevrou wat Olaff saam huistoe bring as sy vrou, maar die paartjie se aardige gedrag laat hulle wonder; onbewus van die kontrak wat Olaff met Christine aangegaan het.

Maar Olaff se planne word belemmer deur die jaloerse eks-verloofde van Christine, Charl (gespeel deur Adrian van As) en veediewe hou hom, sy buurman oom Apie (gespeel deur Albert Maritz) en die polisie kaptein (gespeel deur Nico Engelbrecht) te besig om by sy bruid uit te kom. Boonop vang Christine nog iemand se oog:

Sal Olaff, Christine se hart kan verower, en haar kan red uit die kloue van haar psigopatiese eks-verloofde, Charl (gespeel deur Adrian van As) en sy jaloerse “wens-sy-was-sy” skoonma, Mona, (gespeel deur Jo da Silva) wat van haar ontslae wil raak?
